2009 Summer Seminar Series

with Luo Dexiu
Reknowned expert of Baguazhang, Xingyiquan, Taijiquan and Qigong

Luo Dexiu is one of the world’s foremost experts of the Internal Martial Arts of China. Based in Taipei, Taiwan, Luo Dexiu laoshi began the practice of these arts in his teens and has continued for decades. Soon after he began he became an Asian full-contact fighting champion using these methods. He later continued to dedicate his life and energy to the study and practice of Baguazhang, Xingyiquan and Taijiquan, searching out the teachers and methods of these systems far and wide. He now teaches in Taiwan, and in seminars around the world. He is not only known for his own personal prowess in the arts, but also for his clear and lucid teaching.

Seminar Curriculum, Times and Dates

Five Animal Frolics Daoyin Qigong
Wednesday, August 5th – 7pm to 10pm

This year is the first time that Luo Dexiu Laoshi has taught this qigong system in the West. The Five Animal Frolics is a system of qigong based on the movements of five different animals, hence the name, and was originally devised by Hua Tuo, a famous Chinese physician, nearly 2000 years ago!

Chen Panling Taijiquan - Form and Function
Friday, August 7th – 7pm to 10pm

Luo Dexiu Laoshi’s Taijiquan training comes from the Chen Panling style of Taijiquan, known not only for its syncretic approach to the training of Taijiquan, but also for its depth and understanding of the essence of the Taijiquan approach to training and combat. Whether you are new to Taijiquan, a practitioner of other health, martial and mind/body systems, or a more experienced practitioner of the art, this seminar will help your training and understanding of the arts.

Baguazhang Xiantian Circle Walking and Palm Changes
Saturday, August 8th – 10am to 1pm

This seminar will introduce one to the forms, ideas, concepts, practice and application of Baguazhang's most fundamental and important practice - that of walking the circle. Although this is designed as an introductory seminar on the topic, rest assured that the material will be of use to your training at any level. I highly encourage everyone interested in Baguazhang to come to this seminar.

Baguazhang Houtian Straight Line Fighting Forms
Saturday, August 8th – 2:30pm to 5:30pm

These seminars will focus on the houtian lines 5 and 6 - known for their use of elbows, knees, kicks, locks and throws. These are great seminars for both a review of this material and to get a good glimpse into some intermediate material from the sixty-four houtian palms. The seminars will be accessible to all skill and experience levels. Each of these weekend houtian seminars will be related and a continuation of the previous seminar.

Baguazhang Throwing Methods
Monday, August 10th – 7pm to 10pm

Learn the throws, trips and standing control in the clinch from Gao style Baguazhang training methods. Baguazhang is famous for its devastating throwing techniques and in this seminar we’ll get a chance to look at their training, techniques and application. This seminar will also be a natural extension of the “bridging the gap” seminar from the morning. Participants must be familiar and comfortable with falling and rolling, as well as having the ability to train ego-free in order to maintain a safe training experience for all involved.

Costs and Payment Information

If prepaid and registered before the 28th of July, the costs will be as follows:

  • $65 for each individual session
  • A discounted price of $235 for the full Saturday and Sunday weekend seminars.
  • Or a discounted price of $400 for all sessions.

After the 28th of July, you can register if there are still spaces available, but payment will be taken only in cash, at the door on the day of the seminar – the costs will be as follows:

  • $85 for each individual seminar session.
  • A discounted price of $300 for the full weekend seminars.
